Written scopes beat headline prices. To compare UK EV charger quotes fairly, align charger model and rating, mounting method, cable route and metres, consumer unit assumptions, protective devices, DNO duties, make-good limits, warranty, aftercare and VAT. Put any grant assumption on its own line and verify it against GOV.UK. A cheap quote that omits board work you will need is not cheap. Refuse scopes that only name a brand and a round figure.
Build a side-by-side grid
Rows for hardware, labour, cable, board, civils, notification, make-good, software setup, warranty years and exclusions. Fill every cell or mark "unstated".
Unstated items are where surprise invoices hide.
Technical equivalence checks
Same kW, same tethered length class, same mount location, same assumed spare ways. If one installer assumes a new board and another does not, the prices are not comparable yet.
Ask both to price the board explicitly as optional if uncertain.

Grant lines stay separate
Gross price, assumed grant, net payable. If the grant fails, you must still afford the gross. Check scheme fit on GOV.UK before believing a net figure.

Commercial terms
Deposit size, stage payments, photo evidence duties, cancellation, and whether provisional sums are capped or open-ended.
Vague "extras if required" language deserves challenge.
Decision rule
Prefer the clearest complete scope from a competent installer over the lowest incomplete number. Safety certification and aftercare are part of value.
Keep PDF copies of both quotes with survey photos.

Should the cheapest quote win?
Only if the scope is complete and the credentials check out. Incomplete cheap quotes often grow.
How many quotes do I need?
Two or three survey-backed scopes are usually enough if they are comparable.
What if prices differ by £500?
Look for hidden board, cable or make-good differences before assuming gouging or a bargain.
Can I mix my own charger with their labour?
