Tethered cable length should be chosen from real parking geometry, not from the longest option on a price list. Measure from the proposed mount to the vehicle inlet with the car parked as you actually use the drive, including seasonal nose-in habits and second cars. Common retail lengths often sit around 5m to 8m; too short frustrates daily use, too long creates loops, trip risk and untidy walls. Untethered sockets remain better if you need flexibility across vehicles or destinations. A survey sketch should lock the length before ordering.
Measure the boring way
Park as normal, mark the inlet, and run a tape to the proposed mount including vertical rise and any corner. Add a little slack for cold stiff cables, but do not double the length "for luck".
Repeat the measure for a partner's parking style if two people share the bay.
Hazards of excess length
Surplus cable gets draped over paths, trapped in doors or left in puddles. Holsters help only if people use them.
On exposed sites, long hanging loops catch wind and rainwater.

Moving the unit one metre along a wall or choosing a post nearer the bumper often beats jumping to an awkward extra-long tether.
