EV Charger with Solar Panels in the UK

How to combine rooftop solar with a home EV charger, including surplus charging, tariffs, expectations and survey questions.

By Local EV Installers Editorial Team · Published · Updated

A home EV charger can work well with rooftop solar, but solar will not cover all charging for most UK drivers year round. Midday surplus can trim imported kWh when the car is plugged in at home, while winter commuting often still needs overnight grid energy. Matching depends on array size, inverter behaviour, whether the car is home in daylight, and whether you use a solar-aware charger mode. Model savings with illustrative export and import rates separately from standing charges. A joint survey of PV and charge point settings beats buying gadgets in isolation.

What solar can realistically contribute

UK solar output peaks in brighter months and daytime hours. If the car is at work all day, little surplus may reach the battery unless you also have storage or workplace charging. Weekend daytime parking is where many households see the clearest solar-to-EV benefit.

Do not size expectations from a summer marketing screenshot alone. Winter generation and short days change the picture.

Charger modes and import minimisation

Some chargers offer solar surplus or eco modes that modulate charge power to track excess generation. Others simply schedule a daytime window and hope. Ask which mode you are buying and how it behaves on cloudy intermittency.

Hard clipping to solar-only can leave the car undercharged before a morning departure. Hybrid modes that top up from grid later are often more practical.

  • Confirm CT clamp or meter integration requirements.
  • Ask how the system treats export limitation settings.
  • Check app visibility for solar versus grid energy into the car.

Tariffs, export and standing charges

Imported charging kWh should be costed at the relevant import unit rate. Exported solar earns according to your export arrangement, which may be a smart export style tariff. Standing charges remain a separate line.

Illustrative examples that ignore export opportunity cost can overstate or understate solar charging value. If you divert export into the car, you forgo export payment for those kWh.

Installation coordination

Consumer unit space, earthing, generation isolation and charger protection need one coherent design. Retrofitting a charger beside an older PV system is common, but labelling and isolation must stay clear for future electricians.

If both projects are new, sequence them so cable routes and monitoring hardware are installed once.

Budgeting the combined system

Keep PV capital cost, charger capital cost and ongoing energy cost in separate buckets. Planning bands for each technology are not a substitute for surveyed quotes.

Judge success on reduced grid imports for miles driven, not on eliminating the electricity bill entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Can solar fully charge my EV every day?

Often not in UK winter conditions, especially if the car is out during peak generation. Many households blend solar daytime charging with overnight grid charging.

Do I need a battery as well?

Not required, but storage can move midday solar into evening charging. That is a separate cost and control decision.

Will any EV charger work with my inverter?

Compatibility varies. Solar-aware modulation usually needs supported metering hardware and configuration. Confirm before purchase.

Does solar change DNO notification for the charger?

The charger and the generation system have related but distinct network considerations. Tell the installer about existing PV so maximum demand and protection are assessed together.
